The challenge: Most artists will hire a business manager to split earnings received across their collaborators. If not, they’ll try to do it themselves in an Excel spreadsheet, which gets hairy pretty quickly if you aren’t a math whiz. This may take a while, or—worse—never actually get done, which leaves a lot of unpaid people waiting for their money.

In most deals, the distribution company or record label pays the artist 100% of earnings (after removing their cut, of course). If there are any royalty participants (producers, writers, engineers etc.) owed percentages of those earnings, the responsibility falls on the artist, not the distributing party. 

The payments aren’t straightforward. The artist has to calculate the percentage owed per song across the sales statement and then issue the payments themselves. There are services that will take a cut to do the work on the behalf of the recipients, but we don’t believe a creative should have to pay money to receive money that they’re already owed.
